Charlotte Mbali for Ashford Town Centre

Charlotte has lived in central Ashford for 8 years having retired from an academic job in South Africa. As the volunteer Editor in Chief of Kent and Surrey Bylines she follows local government news from all parts of Kent

She takes special interest in the environment since she belongs to the Green LibDems.

Also noting that adult social care is the largest item on KCC budget, and Libdems were the only party to prioritise it during the last national election, she thinks more LibDems in local government will help to fix it systemically. She is broadly in favour of the proposed local government changes especially because it may enable more strategic land-use planning for transport, new housing and business.

But as it entails abolishing the current boroughs, it is important to strengthen parish level government, which would mean Ashford Town Centre needs its own parish council. A priority would be to revive the town centre. She applauds the child-friendly play structure now in position ( had suggested this in last year’s survey !). County Square would benefit from more footfall if a health facility were to be placed in the old Debenhams, offering the services such as blood tests; ear-wax removal; backpain help;ultrascans etc that NHS is suggesting could relieve its hospital waiting lists.

As the population around Ashford grows, the Town centre needs to be attractive for young people, and accessible with more evening buses. In partnership with business and the creatives, we need more unique activities there to draw in visitors . How about a skating rink powered by solar energy from roofing the station car-park?
