The arrest of local Conservative MP Damian Green today has been labelled "an extraordinary event" by the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary spokesman Chris Took.

According to the BBC the police held Mr Green on suspicion of "conspiring to commit misconduct in a public office." He has not been charged.

The Conservative Party has described the actions of the police as "Stalinesque."

The allegations are believed to be connected to a series of Home Office leaks including, most recently, a letter from the home secretary warning that a recession could lead to a rise in crime.

Commenting on the story Ashford Liberal Democrat's parliamentary spokesman Chris Took said "the arrest of your local MP is one of those extraordinary events that you never expect to see. At first glance, based on the information that has been reported in the media, my main reaction is one of shock and surprise. I have no doubt that we will hear more in the coming days and weeks and we should let any subsequent investigations run their natural course."
