Ashford Town Centre's development has been split into 6 quarters
Responding to the recently agreed Local Development Framework (Kentish Express, March 4th) Ashford Liberal Democrats have set out plans to revitalise our high streets, protect the future of the Post Office and help small businesses establish and grow in a fairer marketplace.
"With the Development Framework agreed we must ensure that our growth is both managed and sustainable" commented Ashford Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Chris Took.
A recent Local Data Company report revealed that 5.6% of town centre shops are currently vacant.
"We must change the skewed planning system to allow independent traders to occupy these shops. Almost every high street in Britain is an identical collection of chain stores and coffee shops - we cannot allow a larger Ashford to simply become a larger identi-kit town."
The Liberal Democrats have also outlined plans to dramatically enhance to role of the Post Office with the introduction of a Post-Bank and access centre for government services.
"Moving everything online is certainly convenient for many but the retention of face to face transactions is essential in retaining the heart of our community" added Mr Took.
