Major step achieved to restore Warden Assistance
Ashford Liberal Democrats, following an emergency motion to the South East Lib Dem Conference, have made significant progress in shaping national policy on Sheltered Accommodation.
The motion, proposed by parliamentary candidate Chris Took and seconded by Kennington campaigner Kelly-Marie Blundell, stated
""Conference welcomes the recent injunction achieved by the UK Pensioners' Strategy Committee against Barnet Council's "floating" warden scheme for residents of sheltered accommodation"
"Conference fully supports the campaign by The Sheltered Housing UK Association to abolish 'floating' warden schemes and to restore resident wardens to Sheltered Housing."
Following a lively debate the motion was passed overwhelmingly. The text of the motion will now be discussed by the Lib Dem policy committee. It is likely that the motion will be put forward at the Liberal Democrat Spring Conference in 2010 and could be part of the Liberal Democrat election manifesto.
"Shaping national policy is just one part of the campaign" explained Chris Took. "We're collecting stories, signatures and supporters to do everything we can to back Sheltered Housing UK's campaign."
"A society is judged by the way we treat the most vulnerable members of that society, the way that we have treated those living in sheltered housing, by removing their wardens, is nothing short of atrocious" added Kelly-Marie.
The Sheltered Housing UK's petition is available at www.shelteredhousinguk.com - SHUK are looking to collate and submit all petitions by the end of November.
