In a sensational interview with local paper The Kentish Express, the man in charge of Highway services at Kent County Council has admitted that Ashford's shared space scheme "has cost a fortune" with much of the 'street furniture' costs "not justified."
Earlier this year The Kentish Express revealed that the somewhat unconventional street lighting that adorns the shared space area cost £7000 per unit, compared to £1000 for a conventional street light unit.
The paper reveals today that the schemes strainless steel litter bins cost £1500, ten times the cost of a conventional bin.
The story, and the comments by KCC's Highways man Cllr Keith Ferrin, seriously undermines Kent Conservative's election comments that they have been prudent with local taxpayers money.
