Local Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Chris Took has labelled Ashford Council's Green Waste Collection cut as "short sighted, ill thought out and a ludicrous false economy."
As part of budget cutting measures Ashford Borough Council's free green waste collection service is to be scrapped. The service has run for the last 4 years. Nearly 2,500 tonnes of green waste has been sent for composting each year.
"I am extremely worried that those who cannot easily transport green waste to Brunswick Road (Kent County Council's Household Recycling Centre) will put out their green waste with their normal refuse collection. This will mean a huge increase in material that could produce compost instead being incinerated."
The Council has stated that the alternative to scrapping the green waste collection service would be to charge instead.
"This though is not a black and white issue and, even if it was, I believe that the vast majority of local residents would agree to necessary council tax changes if they could see that their money was spent sensibly."
